What new patients can expect.

What To Expect During Your Initial Visit

Your initial appointment with one of our doctors for an orthopaedic evaluation will most likely include one or more of the following: a discussion of your pain or injury, a review of your family medical history, a thorough physical exam, X-rays, and an MRI. We ask that you bring the following with you to your visit:

  • Any diagnostic films or test results that may have been ordered or performed by another physician, such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or nerve studies
  • Medical records including surgery notes, if applicable
  • List of medications that you currently take and any medical problems you may have

We recommend that you wear clothes that will allow the doctor to fully examine the part of your body where your injury or pain is located. For example, wear loose-fitting pants or shorts (no jeans) for an exam of your knee or hip. For women, if the doctor will be examining your shoulder or back, we encourage you to wear a sports bra.

After we have performed any necessary tests, you will meet again with the doctor to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options. Your doctor will explain your diagnosis in detail and allow you to ask any questions you might have.

Partnering With Your Doctor

During your exam, it’s important to be as specific as possible about your conditions and symptoms. The more you can tell your doctor, the better care we can provide. There may be more than one option for diagnosing and treating your injury or pain. By acting as a partner with your doctor, you can help choose the option that best fits your needs.

Being able to answer the following key questions can help your doctor diagnose and treat your condition:

  • Where is your pain?
  • What are your symptoms?
  • When did they start and how long have you had them?
  • What were you doing when you first noticed the symptoms or pain?
  • Have you received any kind of treatment for your injury or pain (from an urgent care center or ER, primary care doctor, athletic trainer, etc.)?
  • Have you had this problem/injury in the past? If so, what was the diagnosis and how was it treated?
  • Do you have continuing problems because of the previous injury?
  • Have you ever had surgery in that area?
  • What activities related to your job, lifestyle, or sports make your symptoms better or worse?
  • Have you tried treating your pain at home (over-the-counter medication, ice, heat, brace, etc.)? If so, was it effective?
